Stay tuned....

Not a Great Start....

WoW. Day 2 of our training and I've already messed up. Yesterday was suppose to be our long run; we didn't run. Heck, we didn't walk, we didn't do anything. Upon waking up I noticed my eye was feeling kinda funky. so I checked it out and it was just about swollen shut - gross. So Boz gave me a Benadryl and it knocked me out for another couple hours.

Woke up and had 2 hours before we had to be at Aunt Karen's for the Murphy Christmas party.

After the party we put up the garland, big red bows and white lights on the porch. Neither of us were feeling that great so we watched a movie and went right to bed.

Have no fear, we WILL run tonight. We already discussed that this morning. Its in the 40s today so this evenings run should be very nice assuming there's no rain ;o). Another motivator to getting us out there - we want to try out our new Garmin!!! Of course it arrived when it was 4* outside every day of the week. LOL!

Changes

Afternoon Fellow Runners!!

Guess What!? There's been a change in plans.... marathon training starts next week!!!! Woo-Hoo!! Who's excited?? Who's nervous?? Who's a little of both!? :o)

I'll post the NEW training schedule that we'll be following. I think it fits us more with only having us run 3 times a week. Easier to fit in. Plus we'll have longer.

Let me know what you guys think of it. Also, you know what this means, right?? Being more diligent at posting here on our blog. :~D

Hello Runnerss!

It's now 9:50pm; I'm laying on my couch, ice packs on knees and watching Law & Order: CI. Great show by the way, not nearly at great as SVU... but whatever.

Anywho. i ran a mile tonight - little over 13 minutes. Oh well. Can't all be great, right? i was still happy. I did some arm exercises with my sexy 5lb weights. After that i did about 25 minutes worth of physical therapy. That consisted of..... well... all sorts of stuff - squat jumpy things (I'm great at explaining, huh!?), resistance band w/o and a step thing. Yeah, I'm awful at explaining. OH CRAP! Just remembered i forgot to stretch. Dang it. I'm really trying to be better at that. I never really thought it was all that important. There've been MANY discussions on that; as to whether stretching is good or not. I'm personally still not totally sold on it, but it was suggested that I do it by my PT woman, so I am.

What are your opinions on stretching?

Boz is at his volleyball league tonight. So i guess that'll be his workout for the evening. He's quite the active guy. Not only does he coach, he's also on a volleyball league, basketball league as well as a softball league.

Lovely. I've managed to give myself a slight case of frostbite.

Don't let this happen to you!

Day 2 for Jody & Boz

Hello fellow runners!

It's 8:30pm and I am waiting for my darlin' hubby to return home from coaching. He should be here relatively soon.... i think. Then we'll be going for our run. We both need it tonight. He had a rough night coaching and I just need it like I need a hit. I haven't had a good run in such a long time. I miss those nights/days where I could lace up and head out and run in which ever direction my little heart chooses. And be gone for long periods of time. Now I'm stuck with a crappy half a mile before I start to hurt. THIS SUCKS ASS.

Anyway, I'm gonna go ice my knees before Boz gets home. Hope everyone is doing well with their running!

Love to All.

************************************************************
It is 9:54pm and we're back from our run. I have to admit we strayed from the training schedule. I was curious to see how my knees would hold up so we just ran. We did 1.4 miles in 17:34. So roughly a 12 minute mile.

Currently i am sitting at the computer, my legs propped up with ice packs on both knees. i'm very excited about how tonight went. i feel i could have *possibly* gone longer but i feel like i did more than I should already.

Boz felt great the whole time. Oh! i forgot to mention, we didn't stop at all! Not one stop, not even a slow down.

Tomorrow its back to running/walking as i should be doing. i just had to try it out, I'm sure you all understand.

Do As i Say, Not As i Do.

One of My Cool Running Verses

I have fought the good fight.
I have finished the course.
I have kept the faith.

Training Day One

One day down, a lot more to go. I did my running on the treadmill tonight - though i really should have done it outside. But i know how worried Boz gets when I run alone at night.....besides, i thought it best should my knee act up.

Run 1 minute; Walk 2 minutes. I don't know about anyone else but i hated when my minue was up and I had to walk again. I swear those 2 minutes took F-O-R-E-V-E-R. However, at times it was a blessing as my knees were giving me a little grief. While they seem to be doing a lot better than they have the past year, things aren't quite right yet. Nor did I expect them to be. The PT Sabine, thinks I'm pretty much good to go. Hmm.... not so sure I'd agree. The most I ever ran while seeing her was half a mile. Now when one is looking to run 13.1 miles in little less than 5 months.....its not so encouraging. But we'll take this a day at a time and we'll see what happens. Lord willing in 5 months I'll be leaving ya'll in the dust. ;o) kidding, of course.

Anyone else having trouble with their IT Bands? Mine were pretty tight.

Pre-Training

Morning Runners!

Guess what!? Our pre-training starts Sunday! Woo-Hoo!! Hope you are all as excited as i am. Melissa, I know you are. She's the one who came up with this kiss-ass plan. I won't waste space by printing it out here, so I'll just add the link (I'll link it when I get home).

I'll follow up with you guys regarding this soon. Hope everyone is ready! If not, that's even better. You aren't suppose to be. that's what this pre-training is for.

** To make it easier, I also added the link to our sidebar, under Training **

Run On!

Wednesday, November 15

As you can all tell, this site isn't used a whole lot. Not yet anyway. I do hope that once we all start running this will get more use! It better.

Anyway, here's something to chew on.

"Concentration is the ability to think about nothing"

You'll understand more about this when you are trying to keep your mind occupied for 10+ miles. Its harder than you think.

Working on your legs

Strength-training your legs helps you run strong and stay injury-free.

Do two sets of 15 repetitions on each leg for each exercise. Once you've got that down you can use ankle weights or do what I do, by using those bands.

Knee Extensors: Sit on a chair with a rolled-up towel under the knee of the exercising leg. Angle the toes in slightly and extend the leg straight out. Lock the knee and hold for a three-count; this exercises the medial head of the vastus medialus, the knee's shock absorber. Slowly lower the leg.

Hip Flexors: Lie on the floor, with the exercising leg straight out, and the nonexercising leg bent with your foot on the floor. Lift the exercising leg from the hip, ending at a 90-degree angle with the heel pointing toward the ceiling. Slowly lower. Repeat with foot angled to the outside, then to the inside.

Hamstring Curl: Lie facedown on a flat surface and, bending at the knee, bring the exercising foot up toward your buttocks; slowly lower the leg. Turn the foot toward the outside and repeat; then turn the foot toward the inside and repeat.

Hip Extensors: Lie facedown over a table or bed, pelvis at the edge, feet on the floor. Relax your nonexercising leg to a 90-degree angle at the knee; it should stabilize you but not support you. Keep the exercising leg straight and turn it in at the hip. Lift the leg up to the point where it is parallel with your back. Slowly lower.

Hip Abductors: Lie on your side on the floor, the exercising leg on top. Bend the nonexercising leg 90 degrees at the hip and knee. Rotate the foot of the exercising leg down (inward) to isolate the outside hip muscle. Keep the leg straight (it will feel like it's behind you) and raise it as high as possible. Slowly lower.

Hip Adductors: Lie on your side on the floor, the exercising leg on bottom. Place your upper (nonexercising) leg on a chair or table at a height of about 20 inches off the floor. (Your leg should be at about a 45-degree angle to the floor.) Slowly bring your exercising leg up to meet the other leg. Slowly lower.

Ice = Bad

Last night was kinda hard. Jess & Caleb came over and went running with Boz. i stayed at home, like a good little girl. From what i heard, it sounds like they did a great job as per usual ;o). I'm hoping one of them will post on how it went.

I was told i need to ice my knee every night. Do you have any idea how hard that is? Well first, our ice pack thing broke a while back and we never replaced it; I'll have to pick one up today. In the mean time I used a bag of frozen mixed berries. I'm not even sure where they came from. I'm assuming we bought it as it was in our freezer but I never knew they were there. Boz must be holding out on me.

Anyway, i was laying on the couch with my legs on Boz's lap, when I put the berries on my knee. First i was doing it over my pants (which was fine!) but was told i needed it put in directly on it. HUMPH! just because he's been a coach for all these years, he thinks he's the expert. ....okay, maybe he is ;o)

So I rolled up my pant leg and put the bag back on my knee. OMG was that cold! I literally jumped off of Boz and the couch. I don't know who was more shocked/scared, me or Boz. He could have broken something with the way I was moving. It was horrible. I think the pain of the ice hurt more than my knee. I was actually laying there with tears streaming down my face. I'm such a wimp. I only hope I don't have to have it iced when I'm at PT; THAT could be hugely embarrassing.

Boz wanted me to do 10 minutes on, 20 minutes off for an hour. So after the first 10 minutes i snuck off and went to bed. ;o) Hee hee. I'm terrible.

Here's hoping tonight is a little better!

P.T. Outcome

If you read my other site, there's no need to read this. It's the same thing I posted over there. But since I want to keep all running stuff together, and use this as a journal, I needed to post it here as well.

So I survived my fist session. I was real impressed with the therapist and look forward to going back on Wednesday.

Things we found out today:
* i have tiny knee caps (awww...how cute!)
* i have surprisingly (to her!) weak hips
* how wonderful my husband is - he offered to take over a lot at home in order to help my knees
* my groin pull (didn't know girls had groins b/f this!) is directly related to my bad knee. I figured that.
* i have to ice my knee every night and get a special brace (Forest Gump type?? thankfully not!)
* THE KILLER - I have to stop running. FOR NOW. just until the therapy is over, she'll tell me when I can start back up.
* i can no longer do any lower body exercises, no lunges, no squats... :o(

This is going to be a tough month. I'm sure most would love to be told not to work out. It's killing me. But in the long run, this will help me to run marathons again! Though i may just stick to half marathons.

Tonight's Run

Wow. Let me just say, "I SUCKED OUT THERE TONIGHT" I was so disappointed.

I'll start from the beginning. i was getting off my train when my right leg started feeling all weird. The inner part of my hip (were leg meets body) was killing me. Now I've had times where I feel the need to "pop" my hip back in but this was far worse, its felt like it was being torn from my body. And when that feeling would arise I would get this pain/numbness down my whole leg. And can't put pressure on my leg. I'm starting to think this might not be a good thing.

This happened probably 3-4 times on the walk to my car. When I got home it was feeling alright, no episodes. So I got ready for my run. Jess & Caleb got there around 7:20 and we headed out. i made it not even half a block, before it struck. After cursing a bit I wanted to keep going, so I walked then started to jog. 3-4 houses later it happened again. But now I am BEYOND frustrated and feeling guilty at the same time. Guilty b/c I'm trying to help Jess & Caleb with this and i can't even run 6 feet. Frustrated because.....well....that should be obvious. Because I, a runner, CAN NOT RUN!! It breaks my heart. All I want is to run. To simply put one foot in front of the other. I want to fell the coldness on my cheeks, hear my feet pounding the pavement, and not have to worry about hurting myself.

i should have been great, this is my favorite and best weather to run in. No one understands my NEED to run. I'm dying without it.

My First Time Out Running

I'm tired but it was great!! I honestly didn't know running could be so fun! I think part of it was my Jody-coach. Thank you for helping me!

We ran about a mile and a half and I only stopped once!! When we started we did the whole run 1 minute walk 2. And it worked out great. The weather was perfect for my first time, it was 64 degrees and was fairly breezy, which was nice at times (windy at others)!

I can't wait for my next time out! I also can't wait for the morning after stiffness which Jody says is awesome. I'll just have to see about that!
